“Niagara Falls of the South”

The Call of the Wild

The adventure started on a sunny morning when I decided to embark on a road trip to Cumberland Falls, a State Resort Park that I have always enjoyed exploring. Stepping out of my SUV, I was welcomed by the sound of flowing water and the aroma of fresh pine, one of my favorite scents.

A Spectacle Like No Other

Suddenly, I caught a glimpse of a mesmerizing sight – the magnificent Cumberland Falls cascading down with a thunderous roar, creating a breathtaking display of nature’s power. Under the soft sunlight, the flowing waters sparkled like countless diamonds, creating a rainbow effect. I was mesmerized as if I were the main character in my own thrilling movie!

Embracing the Adventure

There are several viewpoints that offer a close-up experience of the falls, with my preferred one being located near the bottom. On a hot summer day, you can enjoy the sensation of water splashing on you. However, if there has been heavy rainfall, this spot is typically off-limits. Don’t forget to also visit the beach, which is perfect for skipping rocks and admiring Eagle Falls.

Cumberland Falls’ Moonbow

Cumberland Falls presents a unique lunar rainbow known as the elusive Moonbow, which appears at the falls on clear nights. As the sun sets below the horizon, coloring the sky with shades of crimson and gold. Witnessing the Moonbow is a must-do experience in Kentucky for me, and I hope to see it one day. Make sure to visit their website for the updated schedule that is shared annually.

Gem Mining

Unleashing Your Inner Explorer

Visitors at Cumberland have the opportunity to explore various trails and a beach, in addition to the waterfalls. Whether you prefer challenging hikes, a tour of the Pinnacle Knob 1937 Fire Tower, riverside picnics, or horseback riding through the forest, there is something for every nature enthusiast. For a unique experience, consider kayaking to the base of the falls for a closer look. Families with children will especially appreciate the chance to visit the gift shop and buy a bag for gem mining. Our gem-mining adventure was truly enjoyable as we discovered our own precious treasures.
