Are you ready for an exhilarating road trip like no other? Buckle up, because we are about to embark on a thrilling journey along the iconic A1A Highway. Join me on my solo adventure as we explore breathtaking coastal views, charming seaside towns, and hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island was my starting point
The Beginning of an Epic Road Trip
As I set out on this scenic drive, the salty breeze and the sound of crashing waves instantly set the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable adventure. The A1A Highway follows the breathtaking Atlantic coast, providing a scenic view of the blue waters and sandy beaches that extend endlessly. My journey began on the A1A in Fernandina Beach with the intention of traveling all the way to Key West. Unfortunately, Tropical Storm Debbie had different ideas for my trip.
Discovering Charming Coastal Towns
Traveling on the A1A Highway is more than just reaching our final destination; it’s about enjoying the charming stops we encounter along the route. Quaint towns along the coast, each with its own unique charm and friendly atmosphere, invite us to explore. Whether it’s lively beachfront cafes or diverse art galleries, every stop offers a wealth of discoveries.

Unveiling Hidden Gems
During your exploration of the coastal region, be prepared to discover hidden treasures that will leave you in awe. From serene secluded beaches to stunning trails offering breathtaking views, and lively wildlife-filled nature reserves – the A1A Highway grants access to a world of natural wonders waiting to be uncovered. Some of the remarkable findings I came across on my trip along the A1A are:
During my time at Fernandina Beach, I relished having breakfast by the shore while witnessing the sunrise over the ocean. I was captivated by the sight of three pods of dolphins swimming past. It was truly enchanting to observe the dolphins playing in the water. Access to the beach is free of charge, and parking is also complimentary! Additionally, there are amenities such as a playground, picnic area, and restrooms available. From November to April, there is a possibility of spotting whales near the shore.
St. Johns River Lighthouse in Jacksonville, FL
Afterwards, I rode the St. Johns River Ferry, which had an $8 fare, to Mayport. I made a point to visit the St. Johns River Lighthouse, even though it is situated on an operational naval base and inaccessible. Nevertheless, you can appreciate its view and take photos from the nearby pull-off area. Just exercise caution around fire ants, as I discovered firsthand.
Fort Mantanza in St. Augustine, FL
I headed to the National Monument, where entry is free. This year celebrates the Fort’s 100th anniversary! During my visit, Park Ranger Morgan shared valuable insights about the fort. Access to the Fort is exclusively by passenger ferry, so be sure to obtain a ticket from the visitor’s center at the park. The park also offers a beach, picnic area, and nature trails for visitors to explore. Remember to get your National Park passport stamped during your visit! If you don’t have a passport yet, you can acquire one at the gift shop!
Although I didn’t go inside ST. Augustine Lighthouse, I passed by and took a photo of it. The entrance fee is $14.95. The place was very crowded with a long line outside, so I chose to keep moving along the road.
Ponce De Leon Inlet Lighthouse & Museum at Ponce Inlet, FL
My latest discovery along the A1A is a bit hidden from the usual route. I spent a couple of hours at the Ponce De Leon Inlet Lighthouse & Museum. The entrance fee is $6.95 and grants all-day access; you can leave and return with your wristband intact. I had a great time exploring the lighthouse and its surroundings. Unfortunately, due to my postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), I couldn’t climb to the top as I had planned. My body allowed me to ascend only 44 steps. Nevertheless, I still aspire to conquer the full climb one day! This lighthouse in Florida is the tallest one in the state, boasting 203 steps and towering at a height of 175 feet.
Time to Hit the Road
My journey along A1A came to a halt at this point due to the approach of Tropical Storm Debbie towards Key West. As the storm and I were anticipated to arrive in the area at the same time, the memories I made will be cherished forever. I opted to stay at an AirBNB inland, instead of tent camping at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and Bahia Honda State Park. Therefore, I left A1A and made my way towards Winter Haven.
